1978 Pontiac Firebird Install Fuel Cell 2008 11 29

Project List for Week 2008 11 29

This weekend’s project gathering was cancelled for Thanksgiving.  I worked on several small projects to keep momentum up on completing the car

All are welcome Saturday mornings from 9 to Whenever
I may make a trip to NC to pick up a new trailer.  I will update this on the website.

Project #1:   Begin Installation of the Fuel Cell in the Trunk

Ok, here we go. We need to cut a nice large hole in the trunk floor for the sump of the fuel cell to fit through.

View of the under side of the trunk. As you can suspect the old fuel tank bracing is right in the way. This is going to be a pain to cur out.

Lay out of the fuel cell and the hole for the sump.

No going back now!
Fuel Cell 008a_small As you may know the rules say ” When used fuel cells must have a metal box protecting the part of the fuel cell that is outside of the body lines or trunk floor, excluding hose connection area in rear.So we had to make a box. Metal bending is not one of my strong points, but this should do.
Fuel Cell 009_small It does fit in the hole!

Fuel Cell 013_small Started to weld the “Box” in but ran out of welding wire. Does anyone know of a welding store open Sunday evenings?
Fuel Cell 014_small   Changed projects, I did not like the black powder coated fuel cell straps, so I tried the short cut and powder coated red over the top of black. You can probably guess that it did not work out well, so I had to strip them and powder coat again in red.

DONE.
I will come back to this project next week to finish it up, after a trip to the welding shop.
